History, pride, honour – welcome to Taekwondo, a martial art form that dates back more than 2,000 years.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that combines combat and self-defence techniques. The sport has been part of the Olympic programme since Sydney 2000, although was a display event during the two previous Games.
Team GB have recently excelled in the discipline and after Sarah Stevenson won bronze at Beijing 2008, Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad took gold and bronze respectively at London 2012.
It got better still in Rio 2016 when Bianca Walkden ensured a record Olympic Games medal haul for Team GB taekwondo stars. Heavyweight Walkden’s bronze completed a full set of medals for the Manchester-based squad after gold for Jones and silver for Muhammad.
