Swimming has seen some of the most astonishing performances in any sport, anywhere.

The legends are already guaranteed their places in the pantheon of great sportsmen. From Mark Spitz, who won seven gold medals at the Munich Games in 1972, all of them in a record time, to Michael Phelps who became the most successful man at a single Olympic Games by winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, swimming is an incredible sport.

His total medal haul of 23 golds between 2004–2016 is the most out of all sports.

And Team GB have their own superhero in the shape of Adam Peaty – who will be one of the star attractions in Tokyo.

For the 2020 Games in Tokyo, there will be a total of 35 swimming events in the pool, 17 events for both men and women, and a new 4 x 100m mixed medley relay. The 2020 Tokyo Games will include for the first time the women's 1,500m freestyle and the men's 800m freestyle. The other swimming event at the Olympics is the marathon 10km open-water swimming race for men and women.

Team GB won their first medal of Rio 2016 when Adam Peaty took gold in the men's 100m breaststroke with a world record. Peaty won in 57.13 seconds, well clear of the field. Peaty is the first British man to win an Olympic swimming gold medal since Adrian Moorhouse, who won the same event in Seoul in 1988.

Peaty also took silver with the British men's 4x100m medley relay team, along with Chris Walker-Hebborn, Duncan Scott and James Guy. He will be one of the favourites again in Tokyo and could become one of the greats.
